First Night Preview
Family Fun on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at the Center for the Arts
Buy your First Night buttons early and enjoy special shows and activities for children.
Here’s what’s happening:
At 11 a.m.: “Free Your Light, Bring on the Night.” Come dance and enjoy the rhythmic, energizing music of Ellen Clegg. Joined by members of the OffBeat Drumming Ensemble, we’ll groove to the sounds of steel drum, marimba, and Afro-Brazilian beats. This program is for movers and shakers of all ages.
At 1:30 p.m.: “Peter and the Wolf” and other musical stories. Storyteller Tom Knight teams up with duo-pianists, Meg Kelsey Wright and Lauren Bell to present composer Sergei Prokofiev’s well-known musical fable. Wright and Knight will also share an original story, “The Sorcerer’s Cauldron,” set to colorful piano pieces by William Gillock. Mix one evil sorcerer, a good witch, a dash of humor and a measure of audience participation for a delightful tale appropriate for younger children. The short musical interludes throughout the program are a great introduction to themes of classical music and will appeal to all ages.
Plus:
From 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.: Drop in for “Celebration Creations” and help us fill the streets with First Night flair and fantasy. We’ll be making hats, crowns, masks and broaches to celebrate the coming of a new year. Use your imagination and our recycled materials to make festive adornments to wear at the First Night Family Parade or wherever you like. We invite you to take part making art before, in between, and after our First Night preview shows. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
